Diabetes Self-Management Education Program
Conway Regional's Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) program is a recognized site by the American Diabetes Association. The program includes education on:
- Understanding diabetes and diabetes treatment
- Monitoring blood sugar
- Healthy eating and meal planning
- Taking medications
- Exercising for maintaining and improving strength and endurance
- Coping with stress, depression, and other concerns
- Monitoring & preventing complications
- Setting goals
The Conway Regional DSME program is the only education program in Arkansas to receive the ADA's Cure Care Commitment Award. The award recognizes organizations and individuals for their commitment to fighting diabetes.
Seven self-care behaviors are taught which include:
- Healthy eating
- Being active
- Monitoring blood sugar
- Taking Medication
- Problem Solving
- Reducing Risks
- Healthy coping
Classes are offered on an ongoing basis and are available several different times to meet busy schedules. Classes are taught by certified diabetes educators, registered nurses, and registered dietitians. Guest speakers are also provided.
Our DSME program also works in conjunction with the Conway Regional Wound Healing Center to address wound care needs of patients.

Eligibility
The program is open to anyone who has type 1 or type 2 diabetes, anyone with a change in their diabetes management, and anyone with new onset diabetes, as well as any family members or caregivers of diabetes patients. A provider referral is required for eligibility. Discuss this program with your doctor to see if you are a candidate. Patients who are interested in attending diabetes education classes may register through their physician's office or by contacting the scheduling office directly at 501-450-2244.
Costs
Medicare, as well as most third party insurance providers, cover a portion of the cost for this program. Diabetes education is provided to patients who have Medicaid as well. In order for insurance to cover any education cost, a physician referral is required. Any specific costs for patients is determined by insurance coverage. It is imperative to discuss benefits with the insurance company prior to attending the program.
